won’t need a security clearance to see it.

Here is how: Watch a LIVE broadcast of the Science on Saturday
lecture series starting Saturday, February 4 at 9:30 a.m. and again at
11:15 a.m. PST.

Overview: Join thousands of students and teachers taking this virtual field trip
to Livermore Laboratory. On the first trip you will learn about, “The
Gamma-Ray Spectrometer at Mercury: A Seven Year Journey to the
Innermost Planet,” by LLNL scientist Morgan Burks, and teacher Dan
Burns. This lecture will discuss NASA’s MESSENGER mission with a
focus on the gamma-ray spectrometer and the importance of gamma-ray
science in helping to understand the planet Mercury. This talk also
discusses the science and engineering that allowed for the
spectrometer to work at cryogenic temperatures in one of the hottest
places in the solar system.

Many teachers award extra credit to students attending these talks in
person. Download and complete the Student Notes Worksheet to show
your teacher that you haveparticipated in this “cutting-edge”,
real-world scientific exploration and perhaps you will earn extra
credit as well. Student Notes Worksheets are available by download
the week of each talk at:

Apply to be a MATCH Corps member for 2012-2013!

The MATCH Corps, a highly selective one-year urban education fellowship, is looking for top-notch seniors who are interested in joining next year’s Corps. To apply, just fill out this form.

The MATCH Corps program began in 2004 and operates in our three MATCH Schools, all of which are open-admission charter public schools in Boston, MA. The Corps is a group of 135 top recent college graduates who work year round as tutors at our schools, providing one-on-one instruction to six to nine MATCH students each day for an entire academic year.

This full-time service year program is designed to fully close the academic Achievement Gap between minority students and their non-minority peers, one student at a time. Each Corps member works to guarantee the academic success of their students, while also building close personal relationships with them. Corps members also undertake secondary projects working as teaching assistants, administrative assistants, sports coaches, and extracurricular program leaders.

We also offer an optional teacher training program called MATCH Teacher Residency. In MTR, Corps members receive additional training on the weekends with the aim of becoming unusually effective first year teachers in high-poverty schools. Graduates of MTR go on to teach at some of the most highly regarded charter schools in the country and tend to outperform other rookie teachers in the classroom.

To learn more about MATCH 6-12 or the MTR program, watch this video or have a look at our website!

Last but not least, we have some exciting news from here in Boston! Applications are now available to join the MATCH Corps at our newest school, MATCH Community Day. This school focuses on English Language Learners, and the majority of our students come from families where English is not the primary language of the household. Since its opening in fall 2010, the school has attracted significant attention on the state level. On November 9th, Governor Deval Patrick stated that “MATCH Community Day is an example of the type of new-era charter school brought online by the Achievement Gap Act, using innovative ways to target English Language learners. In a school where 85% of students speak another language other than English at home, students are tutored by an elite group of recent college graduates called MATCH Corps. With a focus on reaching students at a young age and growing partnerships with other charter schools, MATCH Community Day is a grand experiment for us to learn from.”

To learn more about our elementary school, visit our website here.
